第1回展「ひかりのまち」
16th Jan-31st Jan 2015,
Opening Reception: 16th January 2015

Charlotte McGowanGriffin(London/Berlin)

“DIALOGUES”
Doubles x 3 parts exhibitions
16th January -14th March 2015
Venue : NICA: Nihonbashi Institute of Contemporary Arts

The International Contemporary Art Exhibition “DIALOGUES” is the three separated exhibitions by six emerging artists who are paired for each exhibition. By having two artists as a combination, it will encourage and challenge each artist to enhance his/her knowledge and skills to create one original program that will lead to global art scene. Through out the exhibition, we are having new challenges.
● Each exhibition is a combination program of two domestic and international artists who meet each other for the first time for this exhibition.

● Each exhibition is created based on communications between two artists.

● Each artist create new works to represent “Nihonbashi” through his/her perspective.

● The people who involves in each process create each exhibition.

Part 1: Friday, 16th Jan- Saturday, 31st Jan 2015,
“Light Town” (Hikari no Machi)
Charlotte McGowan-Griffin (Berlin/London) x Hitoshi Kuriyama (Toride)
16th Jan-31st Jan 2015,

What is the light you see in Nihonbashi? Is it the dim light from Japanese paper screen in Edo era? Or is it the glittering neon lights in today? It is not so simple to talk about lights like that, but you make feel the existential lights throughout the ages in the history.
In this exhibition, you will enjoy the collaboration of art works using neon tubes and Japanese traditional paper.

Part 2 Friday, 6th Feb.- Saturday, 21st Feb 2015
“River Town” (Kawa no Machi)
Jon Sasaki (Toronto) x Hiroaki Morita (Tokyo)
6th Feb.-21st Feb 2015

The city of Edo was evolved and known as “river town”. There are Nihonbashi River and Kamejima River in Nihombashi area, and there are many disappeared rivers such as Sakura River and Shinkawa (river). Soon after the establishment of the Edo Shogunate, the rivers were maintained and used as water transportation where many merchant ships were going by. Those ships played important role to bring not only the merchandise but also culture and wealth to the area.
Having gone through the traumatic disasters such as earthquake and WWII, the rivers much changed as well as the city.
In the exhibition, two artists will collaborate to search the river and to shoot documentary videos cruising underwater by the self-controlled camera. See what happens……find something historical objects, so on ?

Part 3 Friday, 27th Feb.- Saturday, 14th March 2015
“Bridge Town” (Hashi no Machi)
Sam Stocker (England/Tokyo) x Keisuke Kondo (Tokyo)

The town name “Nihonbashi” is actually derived from the particular “bridge”. It is well known that the bridge was a starting point of five major routes (Godaikaido) since Edo era. The bridge has attracted many people and lots of artists depicted the bridge in their art works. It is obvious that the role of bridge, one of the forms of construction, is to connect and combine. And, in fact, it has connected and witnessed many people’s way in its history.

■Charlotte McGowanGriffin(London/Berlin)

Charlotte McGowanGriffin is a British artist born in London. After earning Master degree at Goldsmith College, she has based in Berlin.
Paper cutting, a process of creation by subtraction, entails a paradox whereby form is usually delineated by what is removed or cut away – its negative counterpart. While She has worked with this medium/process since 1999, she has more recently focused on a process she calls “cutting in”, as opposed to the more traditional technique of “cutting out”. The technique rarely involves the removal of paper, and leads to large-scale sculptural works and installations, often temporal in nature.

Hitoshi Kuriyama(Ibaraki)

Hitoshi Kuriyama was born in 1979 in Hyogo, Japan. He earned a Ph.D. in Inter-Media Art from Tokyo University of the Arts (2011). In his works, he explores equivalency in conflicting ideas such as “existence” and “non-existence” or “creation” and “destruction,” and demonstrates them from a scientific perspective. He has theorized the hypothesis “0=1” and attempts to prove it through his works. He has participated in numerous exhibitions worldwide such as “data and vision” Aki gallery (Taipei), “0,1, and visions” Venice Project (Venice), “GLASSTRESS 2011” collateral event of the 54th Venice Biennale (Venice), “Drifting Images” BODA (Soul), and ”What Dwells Inside” S12 Galleri og Verksted (Bergen).
